Lanzarote

Located about 70 miles off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is the most easterly of the seven major islands that comprise the Canarian archipelago. Lanzarote owes its varied terrain to intense volcanic activity and subsequent erosion that long ago created impressive geological features.
The dimensions of the island are 60 km from north to south and 25 km from west to east.
With its unique landscapes, subtropical climate, amazing beaches and excellent range of hotels, Lanzarote is the perfect destination for tourists looking for something out of the ordinary.

Cesar Manrique

Lanzarote is famed for being the birthplace of Cesar Manrique, who fought to limit the amount of development on the island and help with environmental conservation. Lanzarote has seven monuments, created in collaboration with Manrique and the government as he was aware that the island could be a huge source of wealth due to tourism.

Lanzarote History

There is a theory which states that Lanzarote was the first island from the Canaries the Phoenicians visited around 1100 BC. However, what is documented is that around 500 BC the Berbers from Northern Africa were the first who settled the island and named it Tyterogakat. The word Tyterogakat could be translated as either "The burned" or "The red mountains"; there is no consensus about the exact translation.
The name "Lanzarote" comes from a Genovese explorer called Lanceloto Malocello, who arrived at the island in the second half of the 14th century. During the following fifty years several expeditions to the island were organized, in searching for slaves, skins and dyes.

1402-The conquest

The definitive conquest of the island takes place when the Norman, Jean de Betancourt, conquered the island on behalf of the kingdom of Castilla in 1402. The conquerors entered to the south of the island, which at that time had an aboriginal population (Berber descendants), called 'majos'.
During the following centuries the island will have a feudal power structure.

1730-Waking up of volcanoes

From 1730 to 1736, the island was impacted by a series of volcanic eruptions, 32 new volcanoes emerged in a stretch of 18 km. After these eruptions, the agricultural aspect of Lanzarote became extremely hard. However, the islanders overcame these hardships, even managing cultivation in the very ashes of the volcanoes that had decimated their livelihood.

1967 – The hotels that started a new age in Lanzarote

In 1967 the first two tourist establishments of the coastal zone of Puerto del Carmen were constructed: Fariones Hotel and San Antonio Hotel. These two first hotels would be the beginning of what has been considered the biggest transformation experienced by Lanzarote all along its history, actually transformed from an underdeveloped and thirsty island, of peasants, fishermen and emigrants, to turn, in a few decades, into a tourist authority capable of attracting almost two million visitors every year.
