Guide to Car Hire in Lanzarote

Guide to Car Hire in Lanzarote

Having a car to get you around the whole island will make your stay a pleasurable experience, so here we´ll take a look at why hiring a car is such a good idea.

Flying into Lanzarote, you´ll land at Arrecife airport and from there, you´ll need to get to either your hotel or your villa/apartment. Transfers may have been included in your total holiday price but if not, then you´ll need to have booked car hire before leaving home if you want to be spared the expense of using taxis. Don´t make the mistake of leaving your car hire until you land in Lanzarote, as you may find that either the car rental agencies are closed or that there are no suitable rental cars available and you´ll be left only with expensive car options. This is especially relevant if you land in Lanzarote in the early hours of the morning. You could end up being stranded at the airport!

You´re going to want to have the best car for your money and the only way you´ll do this is by arranging your car hire in Lanzarote before you head out to the island. By doing this, you´ll know exactly how much you´ll be paying and you´ll be able to budget properly for your holiday in the comfort of your own home.

Things to Consider Before Hiring a car

Choosing the right size car
It makes sense the smaller the car, the cheaper it will cost, not only for the hire charges but also for the fuel consumption. You’ll need to take into account the amount of luggage you’ll be taking on holiday in addition to your suitcases, such as golf clubs. If you’re travelling as a family, then you’ll probably need more space, so checking the size of the boot space on the hire car will be essential. For those travelling in a group, consider hiring a people carrier rather than two cars as this will be the cheaper option. Compare prices and see what’s available.

Automatic or Manual
Normally, automatics will cost you more than a manual car. Choosing whether to hire an automatic or manual all comes down to personal choice. The roads in Lanzarote are relatively quiet and with the hilly roads, you may enjoy a manual more but if you’re used to an automatic car, you may feel more comfortable with what you know.

What extras do I need?
If you’re going to be travelling with young children, then hiring car seats will be a necessity. You may need to think about a roof rack if you’ll be taking any sporting equipment such as windsurfing boards.

What about insurance?
Insurance is an important aspect of your car hire, so you must make sure that you read and fully understand all the small print BEFORE you go ahead and hire the car. Every car hire company uses different terms and conditions to suit, so it’s vital that you understand what’s involved. You’ll usually have standard crash waiver damage (CDW) included in the cost of hire; this means that if you’re involved in an accident, you won’t be liable for any damage to the car. However, make sure you check the small print on this, as there will probably be a large excess to pay on this. You may find that your CDW may have a number of different exclusions and may not, for example, cover windscreens or tyre damage. If you particularly want these covered, then you’re going to have to pay more.

Are there any other charges?
This is where you’ll need to be careful. Many car hire companies add additional charges for such things as driver aged 21 to 24,one-way hire, airport pickups, cleaning and fuel. Just be aware of what you’ll be liable for before you commit to the hiring as each car hire company is different.

Lanzarote car hire-Tips

Follow these tips to make your car hire in Lanzarote a pleasurable experience:

  • Don’t forget, you’ll be driving on the right hand side of the road, as Lanzarote is part of Spain.
  • Always carry your driver’s licence, your passport and the car rental contract whenever you travel in the car.
  • You must be at least 21 years of age to hire a car in Lanzarote.
  • Remember to always wear your seat belts.
  • If you’re travelling with small children, ensure you’ve arranged for child seats. You may have to pay extra for these.
  • Don’t be tempted to drink and drive – the penalties are high if caught, including jail sentences.
  • Make sure you keep an up to date map of Lanzarote in the car.
  • Ensure your car hire in Lanzarote includes full insurance.
  • Carry cash with you when driving, as not all petrol stations accept credit cards.
  • If you’re driving during the summer months, you may wish to request air conditioning when booking your hire car. This doesn’t always come as standard so check to be on the safe side.
  • Make sure you check the car for any dents and scratches before driving away or you may find yourself being liable for these upon return of the car.
  • If you’ve paid for a full tank of petrol, make sure you have this in place before leaving the car hire company.
  • If you’re travelling in a party, it might be worth considering hiring a people carrier. This usually works out cheaper than hiring two cars and will give you extra space.
  • Car hire in Lanzarote is normally much cheaper than in other part of Europe but you should check that your price includes everything from airport surcharges, taxes and fuel costs, plus delivery charges. You may also find there are mileage charges so look out for these.
  • Check that your car hire company gives you a number to call in the event of breakdown or accident.
  • If you’re unfortunate to be involved in an accident, don’t admit liability, simply contact your car hire company and take their advice on what to do next.
  • Be aware that it’s illegal to throw anything out of a car window.
  • Using mobile phones whilst driving is illegal in Lanzarote so don’t be tempted!
  • Bear in mind that in Spain, children are prohibited from travelling in the front seat until the age of 12 years, unless an approved child restraint is used.
  • Never leave money or valuables in your hire car. Lock anything out of sight in the glove compartment or better still, leave valuables in your hotel or room safe.
